BlueFrog's Telnet Tutorial

Telnet is one of the most valuable tools you will need in learning to hack. In Windows you can launch it by clicking <Start>, <Run>, typing 'telnet', and clicking <OK>.

You'll see this or something very similar pop up on your screen:

To make sure that it is configured properly, go to <Terminal> and select <Preferences…>.

In preferences, you'll see something like this:

Make sure that the local echo option is left unchecked. If you log onto another telnet server and when you type you don't see anything, go back to the preferences and check this option. You should also make sure that you have selected VT-100/ANSI and not VT-52. The other options are really at your own discretion. You can set the buffer to a higher number if you like. Depending upon which version of Windows you are using, you may not be able to select more than 512 lines for the buffer size. Forty is a good number.

Now that your preferences are set correctly, connect to the HackersLab Free Hacking Zone by clicking <Connect>, <Remote System…>, and entering 'drill.hackerslab.org' into the host name field. Also make sure that you enter 'telnet' or '23' in the port field. As above, you should also choose VT100 for termtype. The dialog box should look like this when you are done:

Click on <Connect> in the dialog box and get ready to hack!
